Psychotherapy for Teens

What you need to know…

One of my favourite parts about working with teens is your openness to learn about and discuss mental health. Being a teenager is so hard and therapy is a great place to navigate the challenges you may have with school, your parents, your friends, and yourself.

If you’re thinking about starting therapy, the first thing you need to know about is confidentiality. Everything that we talk about in therapy is kept between us. That means I don’t tell your parents anything about our sessions! The only exceptions to that rule are if you are a danger to yourself or others. This is something we discuss in the very first therapy session or consultation so you have a chance to ask all of your questions regarding confidentiality.

The next thing you should know is that no topic is off-limits in therapy! We can talk about your parents, your crush at school, or the party you went to on the weekend. I always love to hear about the TV shows you’re watching, video games you’re playing, or relatable TikTok trends that I am always behind on. You can swear, you can vent, you can cry, it’s all welcome in therapy.

The reality of therapy…

Therapy is for everyone! Therapy isn’t just for those with severe mental health challenges or diagnoses. No issue is too small if it affects your mental well-being.

Therapy is not a magic solution! Coming to one session every week will not magically solve your problems. Sorry, not sorry. Together, we find ways to bring therapy into your real life and that is where you implement the changes we discuss in session.

Therapy can be fun! While we address difficult topics in therapy, I also try to utilize humour, pop culture, and unique methods to make therapy relatable, engaging, and fun.

What you should know about me…

I am not a magician, a doctor, or a psychic. I am not perfect. I will not tell you what to do, even when you ask me.

However, I will listen to you and help you explore possibilities, find creative solutions, and discover your authentic self. I will hold you accountable for your actions. I will encourage you to embrace your uniqueness and challenge the concept of “normal.”

Some challenges I can help with include anxiety, depression, stress, body image, self-esteem, sexuality, gender, identity, disordered eating, and more.

For Parents

So, you and/or your teen are looking to start therapy. Amazing! I love to see how many families are talking about mental health at home and encouraging one another to seek support.

I have experience working with adolescents and teens aged 12 to 18 with a variety of presenting issues including anxiety, depression, anger, stress, ADHD, eating disorders, parental conflict, self-esteem issues, and more. I have training specifically in working with teens and I engage in frequent supervision with an expert in the field.
