Queer-Informed Psychotherapy
I am a Queer-informed therapist and specialize in working with the LGBTQIA+ community. I spent much of my academic life engaging with Queer Theory and continue to engage in Professional Development on working with Queer clients.
I was inspired to work with the LGBTQIA+ community after hearing about my friends' experiences in therapy. Many of my friends had negative experiences in psychotherapy because their therapists, despite being Queer-friendly, were not well-informed about Queer issues. Due to the unique experiences Queer people face, many mainstream psychotherapy concepts are not beneficial and can be unsafe when utilized in session with Queer clients. I believe the LGBTQIA+ community deserves mental health care that is informed and affirming. I see my work with Queer clients as a love letter to my amazing friends who have supported me and shared their stories with me over the years (you know who you are <3).
I strongly believe that Queer education should be a mandatory requirement for all mental health care practitioners. If you’re interested in reading more about this, please check out my article discussing how lacking Queer education is a barrier to ethical practice.
With my Queer clients, I have supported folks through gender exploration and transitioning, coming out, familial conflict, religious and spiritual trauma, fear and anxiety, shame, issues unrelated to gender or sexuality, and more.
